Established in 1976 as a division of
the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South
Carolina School of Medicine, USC Clinical Genetics is one of three
regional genetics centers in South Carolina, and is the primary source of
genetics services for patients throughout the Midlands region.
USC Clinical Genetics provides a wide range of services to South
Carolina physicians and their patients, including genetic counseling with complex pedigree
analysis, multiple marker screening for neural tube defects and chromosome
abnormalities, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling for prenatal
diagnosis, cytogenetic testing for infertility, mental retardation,
genetic syndromes, leukemia and other cancers.
USC Clinical Genetics is under the direction of geneticists who are
Founding Fellows of the American College of Medical Genetics and certified
by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG).
The Genetics laboratory maintains certification by the Clinical
Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and participates in the College
of American Pathologists (CAP) Laboratory Accreditation Program.
All samples are processed by Cytogenetics Specialists certified
through the National Credentialing Agency (NCA).
